 Questions about Baptism.

Because of the importance of this practice and the many debates often surrounding it, we decided to offer some answers to a few frequently asked questions. At Central Christian, we try to present a balanced view of baptism (one that centers on the cross of Christ). Some churches either deify baptism by making it the most important part of our faith or trivalize it by making it completely insignificant. One says "I'm saved because I was baptized." The other says "I'm saved so I don't need to be baptized."   Baptism is an important part of our faith response to God. It's our embrace of the death, burial and ressurection of Christ. It signifies that we are entering into a relationship with him. It's a pledge or commitment to God and it represents the washing away of our sins. All of those things are beautifully embodied in the practice of baptism. However, baptism it is not some magical ritual or work of merit. It's not a hoop that we jump through to join a church or a legalistic technicality we use to let folks in or keep them out. Baptism doesn't make us perfect or right, just forgiven. It reminds us of who we are, whose we are, and by whose power we are saved.

#1 What is baptism? Baptism is a willing plunge of body and soul into the promise and power of Christ. “willing”—not coerced. Something you want to do. It is your faith response to God. “plunge”—it is immersion. Covering yourself in the grace and goodness of Christ. “into Him”—Baptism is not into a club or denomination. It is into a relationship with Christ.

#2 What does the Bible say about baptism? • It symbolizes our participation in the death, burial, and resurrection. (Rom. 6:4) • It brings us into union with Christ. (Gal. 3:26-27) • It is a promise, a pledge, and a statement of loyalty to God. (1 Peter 3:21) • It is a declaration that we are choosing to follow Jesus. (Matt. 28:19) • It represents the washing away of our sins. (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16)

#3 Why should I be baptized? First, I would point you to Scriptures above. Baptism is how you participate in the power and promise of those passages. But consider two more things. One—the example of Jesus. Jesus himself was baptized (Matt 3:13ff, Mark 1:9ff, Luke 3:21ff) and Jesus taught baptism (Matt 28:18-19, Mark 16:15-16). Two—the example of the early Christians. A reading of the book of Acts and the letters that follow reveal that every person who believed in Christ was also baptized into Christ.

#4 How much do I need to know in order to be baptized? Not much. Baptism is not a graduation ceremony, but a statement about where your life is going. It is not the end of your journey, but a commitment toward a life of growth and development. In the book of Acts the earliest converts only knew two things--they were sinners and Jesus had died for their sins. Based on those simple beliefs they responded to God and were baptized.

#5 Who should be baptized? Every person who has believed in Christ! “Those who accepted his message were baptized.” Acts 2:41

#6 When should I be baptized? As soon as you have believed and are ready to change your life! There is no reason for delay. “As they traveled along the road, they came to some water, and the man said, ‘Look, here is water! Why shouldn’t I be baptized right now?’ So they went down into the water and Philip baptized him.” Acts 8:35-38

#7 Where should I be baptized? Does it have to be in a church or on a Sunday? No. It doesn't matter where you are baptized. It can happen in a river, a swimming pool, or a church baptistry. Anywhere there is enough water to be immersed. Nor does it matter what time you are baptized. You can be baptized during assembly, at midnight, or any time you wish. The questions of “where” and “when” are of little consequence. What’s important is that you are submitting your life to Christ.

#8 Who is allowed to baptize me? Baptisms may be performed by anyone that you prefer. Our ministers and shepherds are available anytime, but often people wish for a relative or close friend to baptize them. Its not about the person doing the baptizing, rather it is about your personal commitment to Christ.

#9 What do I wear? Who can come? There are garments here at the building for you to wear when you are baptized. However, some people prefer to bring their own clothing. Towels are available here and we do have changing rooms. The baptistery is heated as well. You are welcome to invite anyone you wish to your baptism. Some prefer to have just a few close friends and family while others prefer to be baptized in front of the entire church. Having a big crowd is not nescessary but we do encourage you to share this moment with others. Baptism is a public declaration of your decision to follow Christ.

#10 Will I have to say anything? You will only be asked if you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and if you are ready to make him the Lord of your life. You can answer with a simple “yes.”

#11 How do I make arrangements to be baptized? There are several ways. 1) Notify the church office (388-9655 or ccc900@bellsouth.net). 2) Fill out a communication card and mark “I want to be baptized into Christ.” 2) Respond during our response time and talk or call  one of the Elders. We are ready to assist you at anytime.
